rePLAcement
The most common cause of errors on a Commodore 64, that only shows a black screen, is the PLA (Programmable Logic Array). This is a chip, that coordinates the control of the RAM and various other peripheral ICs. Due to manufacturing, the original PLAs become very hot during operation and destroy itself over time. An inexpensive alternative to the original PLA are CPLD-based replicas. These ICs are programmed with the extracted original logic of the C64 PLAs and are therefore almost identical to an original PLA. The board is designed to be soldered or plugged directly into the slot on the C64 board as a replacement for U17 (PLA IC).

The special extra
Because of the newer CPLD technology, the rePLAcement board does not heat up, so it is durable and a sufficient replacement for an original PLA in the C64. Furthermore an original PLA is much more expensive to buy.

Die häufigste Fehlerursache bei einem Commodore 64, der nur ein schwarzes Bild zeigt, ist die PLA (Programmable Logic Array). Hierbei handelt es sich um einen Chip, der die Ansteuerung des RAM und diverser anderer Peripherie-ICs koordiniert. Herstellerbedingt werden die Original-PLAs im Betrieb sehr warm und zerstören sich dadurch mit der Zeit selbst. Eine preisgünstige Alternative zum Original PLA stellen Nachbauten auf CPLD-Basis dar. Diese ICs werden mit der extrahierten Original-Logik der C64 PLAs programmiert und sind somit nahezu identisch mit einer original PLA. Die Platine ist so gestaltet, dass sie direkt als Ersatz zu U17 (PLA IC) in den Steckplatz auf der C64 Platine verlötet oder eingesteckt (falls Sockel vorhanden) werden kann.

Das besondere Extra
Aufgrund der neueren CPLD-Technologie erwärmt sich die rePLAcement Platine nicht, ist somit langlebig und ein ausreichender Ersatz für eine original PLA im C64. Zudem ist eine Original-PLA wesentlich teurer in der Beschaffung.
